Apple explores use of Intel chips -report
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Computer Inc. has been in talks that could lead to a decision soon to use Intel Corp. chips in its Macintosh computer line, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.
The report, citing two industry executives with knowledge of recent discussions between the companies, said Apple will agree to use Intel chips.
Neither company would confirm the report and an Apple spokeswoman told the Journal she would characterize it as "rumor and speculation."
It was unclear whether such a move would signal a large-scale shift away from chips made by IBM, Apple's longtime supplier, the report said.
Apple could choose to add some Intel-based models to its product line or make a complete shift to Intel's chip technology in what would be seen as a serious blow to IBM's microprocessor business, the newspaper said.
Adopting Intel chips would help ensure that future Macintosh systems could meet the price and performance of products from tough rivals such as Dell Inc. .
Apple's pricing, which has often been higher than rivals, could become more competitive if Intel provides the kind of marketing subsidies it has given to other computer makers, the newspaper said.
Apple sells only about three million computers a year -- a small portion of the estimated 200 million sold globally.
But for Intel, winning over Apple would be a prestigious endorsement from one of technology's most influential trend-setters and could associate the chipmaker with Apple's hugely popular iPod music player.
Apple's shares have nearly quadrupled since the iPod was introduced in October 2001.

Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.1
Apple on Monday issued an update to its recently released operating system, Mac OS X Tiger. Mac OS X 10.4.1 includes many improvements to applications, Dashboard, .Mac and syncing, iLife and other enhancements.
Changes to Apple’s Mail and Address Book applications include a fix that could lead attached Pages documents to bring up erroneous alert dialogs. When typing after clicking Reply in a Mail message, all characters typed before the Reply window appeared should now appear in the window.
The update also resolves a potential issue in which Mail could unexpectedly quit, stop responding or fail to import your previous emails if third-party software were installed in a ~/Library/Mail/Bundles or /Library/Mail/Bundles—this update prevents previously-installed plug-ins from loading.
Mac OS X 10.4.1 improves Dashboard compatibility with some third-party mice with scroll wheels, and also for PowerBook G4 computers that feature trackpad scrolling.
Several .Mac syncing issues have been addressed including alert "cannot login to the .Mac sync server" could unexpectedly appear when clicking the Sync tab in .Mac preferences. Compatibility with the Motorola V180 and V551 has been improved in iSync 2.0.
A problem affecting Safari and some PDF files would cause Safari to unexpectedly quit when Control-clicking, has been fixed in the update. iDVD no longer quits unexpectedly when hiding it while burning a DVD or saving a disc image and an issue where iPhoto could unexpectedly quit has also been fixed.
Several other general enhancements are also included in Mac OS X 10.4.1. The update improves security by disallowing files, applications and web pages from being opened at the password prompt that appears when waking from sleep or stopping a screen saver.
The update is available via the software update control panel or as a standalone download from Apple’s Web site.

Apple could flip iTMS subscription service
Apple could launch iTunes subscription services with a flick of a switch, a leading analyst said on Friday.
Merrill Lynch analyst Steven Milunovich made the claims, while observing that Apple’s stock value currently represents a buying opportunity for investors. He also said that the new Yahoo music download service is a challenge for Napster and Real, but not so much for Apple.
The analyst thinks Apple may flick the subscription switch if it sees any erosion in its current 70 per cent market share. Subscription services are currently battling over just 15 per cent of the online music market.
"Although we think the iPod franchise is safe for at least the next year, the driver of the stock increasingly will be Mac sales," the analyst said, predicting a 15-20 per cent growth rate for hardware revenues.

iTunes presses play on video
The all-conquering iTunes Music Store looks to be morphing into a multimedia download shop.
The new iteration of iTunes comes with new features for the music store and updated QuickTime video support, leading to speculation that the update is paving the way for Apple to sell music videos or longer film downloads alongside its traditional singles and album business.
Apple is already using the updated capabilities to sell a small number of video downloads as extras to single purchases. For shoppers buying the Gorillaz album through the U.S. store, iTunes throws in four short video clips. Full story
